About Land of Spirit

Land of Spirit is a professionally produced folk life play based on the stories of the people of Franklin County and Northeast Georgia. While Land of Spirit measures up to the best of current avant-garde productions, it is also a play that provokes fierce pride in the participants. The title refers to the abiding spirit of the people – hardworking, self reliant, thrifty, and God fearing. Built from the oral histories of the locals ‘remembering’, it shares the stories, sayings, phrases and diction of the folks that made up the history of the area. It blends folk remedies, ghost stories, jokes, well-known scandals and deeply held secrets with true stories of living, and making a living, in the days of cotton and trains. It contains births, deaths, dressing up, dressing down, mother love, family violence, moonshine, and love. It has folk tunes, the blues and lots of belly laughs.

Each season, the Land of Spirit production features a different theme or story. Locals put aside their normal activities, and transform themselves into actors to create a performance that provides compelling, authoritative and confident theater. You just can’t help hummin’ along.

Land of Spirit is presented by the City of Lavonia, for the purpose of providing cultural and art activities to the citizens of Lavonia and surrounding communities. It is supported, in part, through contributions and volunteers from A Greater Lavonia Community, Inc., (AGLC) a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, developed by Lavonia’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and local volunteers in support of Lavonia Cultural Center projects and activities.

Past performances of Land of Spirit include- “The Last Hard Times” (2008), “Gas Sugar Nylons and Chocolate Bars” (2009), “Ahh, Shot in the Arm” (2010), “The Secret Quilt” (2011), “Front Porch Stories” (2012), “Under the Magnolia” (2013), “Franklin Feudin’” (2014), “Franklin Feudin’ 2” (2015), “Aunt Annie’s Amazing Attic” (2016), and “Living, Loving and Dying” (2017).
